‘‘Very caring dentist and staff. Dr. Perkins was our Dad's dentist for years. He had two molars pulled when he was 89 years old and had Alzheimer's. They were so gentle, and his recovery was speedy with no problems. Thanks, Dr. Perkins!’’
- Meg H. (Daughter of a Perkins Patient)
Exams: Dental examinations help diagnose diseases before they become hazardous to your health. Your dental exams generally include the following: oral cancer screening, gum disease evaluation, visual analysis of tooth decay, diagnostic x-rays, and evaluation of the teeth.
Cleanings: Professional cleanings form the foundation for preventing gum disease and tooth decay. During your cleaning, we will: remove plaque from the teeth, remove calculus (tartar) above the gum line, and polish and remove stains from teeth.
Dental x-rays and radiographs allow us to see what is not obvious to the naked eye, such as cysts, cancerous tumors, invisible decay, and how your teeth are growing. Diagnosing problems early can save you money and protect your oral health.
The advantages of modern digital x-rays and radiographs include: reduced radiation, defined image quality, instant viewing, and they are environmentally friendly. What is not to like?
Gum disease is the most common cause of tooth loss and exhibits various symptoms, including swollen/inflamed gums, plaque/tartar buildup, bleeding gums, and gaps between teeth and gums.
Dr. Perkins does all she can to catch it early, but if the disease has developed, then there are a few ways to treat it. Firstly, we remove the bacteria and substances that form in the pockets around the teeth by using modern technology and advanced training. Once she's removed the bacteria, the pockets must be cleaned and maintained on a regular basis by your dentist. Otherwise, the bacteria will return.
Your back teeth (molars) have small pits and grooves that can trap food, which can't be removed by brushing or washed out with water or saliva. If left untreated, the food can cause decay and damage your teeth.
A sealant is a tough, plastic material designed to bond (stick) to tooth enamel. These clear or tooth-colored sealants are painted onto the tooth surface to "seal" the pits and grooves and protect against decay. We normally apply sealants to children's first permanent molars. They can also be useful for adults in certain situations.
Whether you currently suffer from tooth decay or want to replace those unsightly mercury fillings, our natural-looking composite fillings will bring a fresh feeling to your smile.
A composite filling is a tooth-colored material. After tooth decay is removed and cleaned, this material is layered into the tooth. Each layer is hardened or cured with highly intense visible light, and the final surface is shaped and polished to match the tooth. The final restoration is virtually invisible, environmentally friendly, and much stronger than mercury fillings.
